Friday Message – September 17, 2021
Monthly Training Session – Last night we completed the second of the jointly sponsored training sessions we host each month with FedPoint. The subject this month was managing your chaos and our speaker, Natalie Marie Collins did an excellent job of presenting the material and giving some great tips on how to organize our lives. If you missed the presentation, I would encourage you to go online and watch the recording. Next month we will be having a presentation done by representatives from the Office of the Inspector General. Please watch for more details going forward with the links to that training. The training will deal with types of investigations that the OIG’s office conducts, as well as things that we as Postmasters, Managers and Supervisors can do to stop a number of crimes that take place through the mail. As I said, as we get closer, I will share the links for that training.
Legislative Summit – We are in the final preparation stages for the Legislative Summit. If you have not registered but wish to attend, you can still do so. Please contact Gerri Swarm at the National Office next Monday and she will take care of your registration. We have approximately 220 people that are registered for the Summit. On Monday, September 27th we will have a number of speakers. We have invited Peter Pastre, who is the Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy at USPS Headquarters to come and speak. In addition, we will have both the Chairwoman and the Ranking Member from the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Carolyn Maloney of New York and James Comer of Kentucky that will be there to speak either in general session or to a smaller audience at a luncheon for the Legislative and PAC Chairs and the PAC Medallion recipients. We will hear from Representatives Andy Levin from Michigan and Anthony Brown from Maryland, as well as Garrett Graves from Louisiana. In addition to the speakers, we will be going over the talking points you can use when addressing issues like Postal Reform and the WEP/GPO legislation that is pending before Congress. This year we will be conducting some of our meetings with the members of Congress via ZOOM and we will be offering a ZOOM opportunity to participate in the Summit on Monday, September 27th. We will begin at 8:30 and we are currently scheduled to go until 5:30, or 6 PM. I would remind those of you that are active employees that you must be in a non-pay status, and you may not use your Postal computer to participate in the Summit. If you are going to be logging in through the ZOOM, please note that with the link we have set up and with the company we are using to provide the link you will not be able to speak on the ZOOM; however, we will have a technician monitoring the feed and you will be able to ask questions through the chat function on the screen. Chapter Member Representative Academies – Tomorrow we will have our second of four Chapter Member Representative (CMR) Academies. Last weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina we had over fifty of our members that participated in the training session. We all had the opportunity to hear from a member of the staff of the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and that is what led me to the idea to offer that same training to all our members as outlined above. NOTE: Those training sessions will be held on October 14th and 21st.
We will be taking a break from the CMR Academy schedule until mid-October, but if you are interested in being a CMR in your chapter I would encourage you to talk to your Chapter President and they can get you signed up for one of the upcoming sessions. We will be in Boise, Idaho on Saturday, October 16th and in Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday, October 23rd.
