September 3, 2021 Update from Dan Heins, UPMA National President

Posted by Frank Augustosky on 09/03/21

Friday Message – September 3, 2021

Executive Director – As I know many of you are aware, David Ravenelle who has served as Executive Director for almost 8 years will be retiring from UPMA on October 31, 2021.    Also, I believe most of you were aware that the National Executive Board had posted that position some time ago and the closing date for applications was August 10th.    After interviewing the applicants and reviewing the information available, with a recommendation from President-elect Edmund Carley the National Executive Board voted this past Tuesday to hire Daniel Heins as the new Executive Director.   I will begin my duties as Executive Director on November 1, 2021.   I look forward to assisting soon to be President Carley in continuing to move UPMA forward and to help him in carrying out the plans that he has for the organization during his three-year term as President.    I want to thank the Executive Board for the confidence they have placed in me by giving me this opportunity to further serve our UPMA membership and to help oversee the operations at the National Office.

Free Membership – I just wanted to make sure that everyone is aware that the National Executive Board made the decision at their board meeting prior to the National Convention to extend the one-year free membership to EAS employees that join the organization until March 31, 2022.

Monthly Training Sessions Resume – Next Thursday, September 9th at 7:30 PM EDT we will have the first of our monthly training/informational sessions for September.   This month’s training will be conducted by Natalie Collins who is a Business Coach for several companies.    The Nevada Chapter had Natalie speak as part of their convention and it was recommended that we make use of her, so she has agreed to do the sessions this month.   Her presentation is entitled, “Organizing all of your Chaos.”   Life has a way of pulling us in all kinds of directions, leaving our thoughts scattered and our lives messy. It can be hard to keep track of everything, remember what needs to be remembered, and make sure tasks get done and deadlines get met.
Too bad fairy god mothers don't exist to waive their magic wand and make it all easier.  I have good news for you, though. Natalie Marie Collins has discovered a simple way of using a notebook to bring all your thoughts, notes, and tasks together all in one place, plus how to work with and manage everything, so your life can finally become easier and much more organized. She's going to share her step-by-step process with us this month. I hope you can join us.

The login information for next Thursday’s session is on our website and I am going to include it here, as well.

Title: Organizing all of your Chaos

Legislative Summit – Our preparations are moving ahead for the 2021 UPMA Legislative Summit at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia.   As of yesterday morning, we have 207 people that are registered for the Summit.  On Monday, September 27th we will have a number of speakers, we have invited Peter Pastre, who is the Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy to come and speak.   In addition, we will have both the Chairwoman and the Ranking Member from the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Carolyn Maloney of New York and James Comer of Kentucky that will be there to speak either in general session of to a smaller audience.   We will hear from Representative Andy Levin from Michigan and Anthony Brown from Maryland, and we are still looking to finalize at least one other representative to be with us.    In addition to the speakers, we will have we will be going over the talking points we can use when addressing issues like Postal Reform and the WEP/GPO legislation that is pending before Congress.   In order to better equip our Legislative and PAC chairs to set up the visits while you are here in the DC area (either via ZOOM, or in person whenever possible), we will be changing our ZOOM meeting format for Legislative and PAC Chairs for this month to take place on two successive Wednesdays to share information.   The first will take place on Wednesday, September 8 at 8 PM EDT and the second will be held on Wednesday, September 15th also at 8 PM EDT.   The plan is that the Government Relations Team will go over some tricks of the trade when it comes to setting up the meetings on Wednesday the 8th and then on the 15th, they plan to be on to answer any questions, or help you over any hurdles you have encountered when it comes to setting up the meetings on September 28th.
