July 9, 2021 Update from Dan Heins, UPMA National President

Friday Message – July 9, 2021

Announcing your intention to run for office – At the convention next year we will be electing four National Vice Presidents to serve a three-year term on the National Executive Board beginning November 1, 2022.   If you, or someone you know, is considering a run for the position of National Vice President for the term of 2022-2024, be aware that you can announce that intention effective July 15, 2021.   Our national board policy states that you can announce up to thirty days prior to the start of the National Convention preceding the convention at which you will be elected.   So, since our 2021 convention begins on August 14, that puts the announcement date on July 15 this year.   If you have any questions, please send me an email dheins@unitedpma.org, or call my cell phone, 507-438-2676.   

National Convention – Just a reminder that the national convention is coming up next month and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in attendance.  If you have not registered yet, you can do so online (unless you are a first timer registering at the special rate, then that must be done via hard copy).  Speaking of first timers, the committee that I have put together to work with the first timers is looking at doing some new things to make sure that as a first timer they have a very good experience at the convention.    Next week we will have more details on some ways that you can get involved and assist the committee in making sure everyone has a great time!   Also, please note that the current room rate at Kalahari will be expiring on July 12th, so if you have not made your reservations, please do so before the 12th.   Note that you will be charged one day non-refundable room rate on the 12th, as well.    Another item to keep in mind is that for the first time this year we will be offering one day registrations at the convention.    If you register prior to arriving or register onsite the cost is $75.00 for the day.   That $75.00 gets you into all the general sessions, training sessions and any large group meals that we will have.    As of now I have the assurance that we will be hearing from our Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and our Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino during the convention, I am just not certain what day they will be joining us.   Once I have that information firmed up, I will let you know.

Restructuring Update – The first round of selections is being made from the postings that went out for those that have been identified as impacted by the restructuring and those that are in the affected areas.   The goal is to have all those individuals placed by July 17th.   However, with the number of people that some individuals must interview it could take another pay period beyond that.  Once this round is completed the remaining jobs will be posted again.   The process has been slowed down due to the number of people that applied, even though they were not identified as impacted, or in the impacted areas.    Please the next time the jobs go up at the end of this month, remember that if you are not in one of those impacted positions, or impacted areas of consideration (District, Area, and Headquarters staffs) please save your applications until the process is open nationwide.

NPA and PFP – The National Performance Assessment (NPA) and the Pay for Performance (PFP) process continue to be a work in progress, and I certainly hope to have some finalized information from Headquarters in the very near future.    I hear from many of you the frustration of not having had your goal laid out for you and we are so very deep into the year.    It is my hope that we can be much further ahead as far as having goals set for Fiscal Year 2022 by the time the new year starts on October 1.   Please continue to be patient and know that I am working on it on a regular basis. 

Executive Director – Due to the retirement of Dave Ravenelle, our current Executive Director, UPMA will be looking for a new Executive Director starting on November 1, 2021.   The information on the position along with the application process is posted on our website unitedpma.org under the resources tab, as well as it was included in the last issue of the UPMA Leader magazine.   Please note that the application deadline is August 10, 2021.
