Friday Message – December 18, 2020
Over the past few weeks, I have been receiving many questions regarding what is happening with the pay scale for 2021. I received the official notification yesterday that the tops of the pay scale will be increased by 1% for each level and the dollar amount of that change will be added to the bottom of the pay scale. So, while the top was increased by 1%, the bottom numbers actually increased at a higher percentage. I am attaching a copy of the new pay scale amounts with this email. This information will also be posted on our website. For a number of years the Postal Service has used the salary increases that are offered to the federal workforce as a starting point in our discussions regarding what changes should be made. This year it appears that the federal workforce may not be getting a raise, or it will be at the 1% level, as well. That is how this determination is made and while we had requested a number higher than that, this is what is offered and the fact that the USPS is willing to increase the bottom numbers by a higher percentage is a positive thing.
This week I participated in a meeting of the National Election Mail Task Force regarding the upcoming runoff elections for the two Senate positions in Georgia. As I am sure all our members in Georgia are very much aware the same attention to detail and dealing with mail is taking place for this election as was in place for the national election last month. With that said, if you are in a neighboring state, or if you are anywhere in the country and you see mail that looks like it may relate to the Georgia elections make sure that you keep the focus on getting the mail home to where it belongs. There is a tremendous amount of attention on these two Senate races because the outcome will determine which party has control of the Senate. Currently there are forty-eight Democrats and fifty Republicans that are seated or will take over in January. So, if both races go to the Democrats it will lead to a fifty-fifty split and with the election of Vice President Kamala Harris, she would, as the President of the Senate, be the one casting the deciding vote to give a 51-50 majority to the Democrats in the event of a tie vote on an issue. Time will tell, but as I said, keep your eyes open for election mail.
As of today, there is one week left until the “official” end of the 2020 PEAK season. Everything that I am hearing is that it is definitely one for the record books! Thank you to all of you for the extraordinary efforts you and the employees that work with you have made. I know it is not over but with the end in sight, it should be over sooner, rather than later. Do your best for the next few days to keep your focus on the job at hand and as I have said in previous correspondence, be sure to let your boss know if there are issues in your office and seek their input on how to handle any mail you may need to delay. Again, if you delay it, REPORT IT, I cannot stress that enough.
Recently I have been receiving correspondence from the team heading up the efforts for the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The previous two years I had the opportunity to participate in a video encouraging as many of you as possible to participate in the CFC at whatever level you are comfortable with. With the COVID and everything else going on, they are not doing that video this year. I would like to share a paragraph from a letter I recently received from the committee regarding the difference that participation in the program can make. “Please invite your members to join us and Be the Face of Change. Even one volunteer hour or $1 a pay period can make a tremendous difference, contributing to programs that provide care packages to deployed troops, shelters that help house the homeless, or animal rescues that give a stray a second chance at life. Your members’ social media accounts can follow our CFCNCA content on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram, allowing your members to engage and share posts.” So, when you have some time please take a look at the CFC and make a decision if you are able to participate.
