Posted by Frank Augustosky on 07/10/20
Friday Message – July 10, 2020

Sympathies – Our sympathies go out to Gerri Swarm and her family on the sudden passing of her husband Bill last Sunday.

COVID 19 – The message is much the same as it has been.   Continue to make sure that you are doing what is necessary to stay safe yourselves and also to make sure that you are doing what you can for your employees.   With the continued spread of the virus in parts of the country we need to make sure that we are taking the necessary steps to protect ourselves and our employees.   We all just need to make sure we are taking necessary precautions.

Chapter and National Conventions – As of today we have over twenty chapters that have not scheduled their chapter conventions.   We have many chapters that are monitoring the situation in their areas as they look at possible dates for their conventions, or they are moving forward setting dates into September and October.    We will be making the decision regarding the dates for the national convention sometime after the first of August when we see what the situation is in St. Louis which will help up to determine how many people we can have attend, etc.

New PMG:  While we do not know what changes may be coming out of Postal Service Headquarters with the installation of the new Postmaster General, we do know that all areas of the operation are being looked at.    We have been hearing about mandating lunch breaks in service in some areas; however, that is being rolled out prematurely from what I am told at this time.   Dan will continue to monitor the situation and keep everyone as informed as possible as changes develop.

Legislative Update: While Congress is doing their best to get back to work, their still has not been any action on the HEROES Act in the Senate and there has not been a new comprehensive COVID relief package that has been introduced.  However, Senator Susan Collins from Maine and Senator Diane Feinstein from California have introduced S.4174 - A bill to provide emergency appropriations to the United States Postal Service to cover losses related to the COVID-19 crisis and to direct the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service to develop a plan for ensuring the long term solvency of the Postal Service.  The bill has received bi-partisan support and we will continue to monitor the progress of the bill going forward.

Membership – The national membership contest ended on June 30th.  The National Membership Committee is looking at putting together a new contest for 2020-21.    We will keep everyone informed as the guidelines are developed.

CMR Academies – We will be having our make-up CMR Academies in November.   The Pittsburgh Academy will be held on Saturday, November 7th and St. Louis on the 14th.     We will once again be handling the registrations, etc. through the national office.    The national office will be covering the costs of the rooms and the meals on Saturday, the chapters will be responsible for the travel to get their individual members to the location.

NPA – Continues to be discussed at the Headquarters level and information will be shared as it is available.

Dan Heins, National President
