Daniel M. Heins, President of the United Postmasters and Managers of America (UPMA) released the following statement upon passage of HR 2382, the USPS Fairness Act.

The House of Representatives passed the USPS Fairness Act on a 309 to 106 vote on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.  This vote is a strong reminder of Congressional recognition of the challenges imposed by Congress on the operations and budget of the postal service with the passage of the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) in 2006.  This legislation is a step in the right direction.   UPMA will continue to work hard to advance and advocate meaningful and impactful legislation that can improve the long term viability of the postal service, limit the harmful impact of drastic cuts to services for post office customers and secure a healthy, decent earned retirement for the Postal Service employees who gave years of service to their country and community. We see this legislation as a first step to resolving some of the challenges facing the next Postmaster General.  UPMA continues to advocate for measures that will bring meaningful and necessary legislative relief to the United States Postal Service (USPS) and  we ask that Congress continue to work in a bipartisan fashion for reforms that yield long-term stability. 

Congresses action today is a start to the legislative process – but there are many steps left and many more issues that must be addressed to truly ensure postal services continue as expected by the American public. 

In the coming weeks, UPMA members will be on Capitol Hill discussing all of the priorities that need Congressional attention.  Overwhelming bipartisan support and common-sense solutions are available to Congress. We look forward to a continued dialog that will keep the USPS the most trusted government agency of the American people.
