Safety – it needs to be more than a word, it needs to be a way of life.

As the supervisors, managers and postmasters in our units it is essential that we set the tone, set the expectations and then follow through to make sure that all of our people are working safely.   We cannot and we must not be afraid to give feedback when someone is working in an unsafe manner, but we also need to make sure that we are praising those that are working safely and setting a good example.    That praise should go a long way toward encouraging all of the employees in a unit to focus on what they are doing every day to work in a safe manner to make it a daily routine.

As leaders in our units we need to make sure that we are stressing the personal aspects of safety.   What are you doing to make sure that your employees can go home each and every day?   Make sure you do everything in your power to make sure the employees that we work with understand the expectations and the procedures to follow if they know of a safety issue in the workplace, or on their route.     When they are reported, make sure you address the issue as soon as possible.

Again, we are the leaders and we need to set the tone for safety for all of our employees.
