Perry, Iowa had one such post office. Built in 1914, the once glorious post office turned administrative building, had fallen into disrepair. Fast forward to 2012 when a couple of women decided to put in a bid for the building. They were able to purchase the old post office for $1.
Now the beautiful old building has been renamed to La Poste and is a destination in itself! You can rent the facility for any event from weddings to art events, it is once more a gem in the small community.
There are currently only 1,034 post offices in the state of Iowa. I wonder how many more could be purchased for $1? Come visit us in Iowa, let’s go exploring! You never know what history you may find.
