As many of you have already heard, we have decided to postpone the 2021 Legislative Summit until the end of September.   The dates will be September 26-29, 2021.   This decision was reached through consultation with our Government Relations Team (Chris, Brian, and Joel) and our National Legislative Chair, Edmund Carley.    We decided that there would be a much better chance of us being able to get up on Capitol Hill to have face to face meetings with the Congressional Members, Senators and their aides at that time.   There is really no chance that the Hill will be open at the end of February.   If you were registered for the February dates, we will just roll your registration information over to the September dates unless you request a refund from Gerri Swarm at the National Office.   Also, if you had reserved a room at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City Hotel, you need to make sure you call as soon as possible to cancel that reservation to avoid any charges to your credit card.

As we head into the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, I hope that many of you will be able to enjoy some time off and get to relax in some way.   I know that for most of us this holiday always offered additional challenges with the weather in a good part of the country and this has historically been one of the least observed holidays by most of the business world which just compounds the issues with volume and packages.   That coupled with the ongoing COVID issues will, I am sure, make it especially challenging this year.   Make sure that you reach out to your manager if you have ANY issues in your office.  By communicating and doing so in writing whenever possible will go a long way to making sure that you stay out of trouble and get the job done to the best of your ability.

The UPMA Pay Talk Team had our initial meeting last week and we went over some of the issues that we will be discussing with the Postal Service when the Pay Consultation process actually opens up.    I want to thank those of you that contacted us with suggestions regarding issues we should be consulting on.   We have looked at all those suggestions and will be looking to incorporate that information where appropriate as we begin the process.   Just to remind everyone, our pay consultations do not open until we receive word from the Postal Service that we can begin those talks.   The official period does not start until we are notified and that does not happen until after we hear that the NALC has ratified their contract.   Once that ratification is official and certified, then the Postal Service has a maximum of 45 days to send us the notification that the process will be taking place.

Last week I had the opportunity to sit down one-on-one with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and discuss some issues related to where the USPS is at currently and what his vision will be going forward.   I very much appreciated the time he took to keep me informed of what his plans are and how he plans to keep all of you as leaders in the organization informed of what his vision and objectives are for the Postal Service.   At this time I am not at liberty to share the information I received, but I wanted you to know that we, as an organization, are at the table and we are being kept in the loop on what is happening and what is being proposed.   I know that once his vision and plans have been presented to the Board of Governors he plans to communicate that information to all of us as leaders so we understand what is happening and why we are doing the things we are doing.    I would very much encourage you to take the time to get that information when it becomes available.   As has been stated many times, it is difficult to understand the plays if you haven’t seen the playbook.    Mr. DeJoy’s goal is to make sure we all have the playbook so we can march down the field with an understanding of where we are headed.

As always, stay safe, wear your masks, use hand washing and hand sanitizer and make sure your employees are doing the same!
